Salbutamol is a bronchodilator used to relieve bronchospasm in individuals who have asthma, COPD, bronchitis, and other breathing impairment caused by bronchospasm. It is a very widely-used medication and suitable for use in ages 2 and up, though dosage modification will be needed for younger patients.

Patients often buy Salbutamol under it's other names, albuterol or salbuterol. These are all different names for the same product.

Salbutamol is available in a range of formulations as well. In addition to the injections that may be administered in a hospital setting, one can buy Salbutamol in inhalers, tablets, nebulizer fluid, and oral solution. They all have their pros and cons, but all are effective at relieving bronchospasm.

Salbutamol Inhalers

This is the most widespread use of Salbutamol; inhalers are widely-available, inexpensive, convenient, and discreet. Inhaler use is typically the same, assuming Salbutamol is the only ingredient:

  • 1 or 2 inhalations should be administered as-needed, when symptoms of bronchospasm begin.
  • Inhale the medication as slowly and steadily as possible.
  • Hold each inhalation for at least 10 seconds, if possible.
  • Wait 30 to 60 seconds between administrations.

Patients can also buy Salbutamol inhalers that contain multiple ingredients; either both bronchodilators, such as Combivent, which contains albuterol as well as pratropium bromide, another bronchodilator, or inhalers that contain Salbutamol and a steroid, such as Aerocort, which contains levoSalbutamol and beclomethasone, an inhaled steroid. Dosage and treatment guidelines will differ to some extent with these other medications.

Nebulized Salbutamol

With the removal of epinephrine inhalers from the market and the replacement of CFC propellants with HFA---which many individuals find is more detrimental to breathing than Salbutamol is beneficial---patients began to buy Salbutamol in nebulizer fluid more often. It is now the second-most popular use of this medication.

Salbutamol for nebulizers is sold in groups; each group contains a number of plastic ampoules, and each ampoule contains a single dose of Salbutamol. Using them is easy, assuming one has a nebulizer:

  • Separate an ampoule and open it by twisting off the cap.
  • Empty the ampoule into the nebulizer cup.
  • Turn on the nebulizer and breathe slowly and deeply until the medication is gone.
  • Repeat as needed every few hours, up to 20 mg per day.

In practice, few patients use nebulizer fluid as above. More often it's used as an inhaler; a few inhalations as-needed, but from a nebulizer rather than an inhaler. As this use generally consumes far less product---a single ampoule can last several days---there's no issues with using it in this manner.

Salbutamol Tablets

The third-most common formula patients buy Salbutamol in is tablets. It's an interesting combination; a fast-acting bronchodilator in a relatively slow-acting tablet. While inhalers or nebulizers start producing results within 5 minutes, tablets begin working after about 15 minutes and it may take up to an hour for maximum benefit, so they're not ideal as a rescue treatment. In other cases, however, they're generally a bit more potent and effects may last longer.

Treatment typically consists of:

  • Start with 2 mg or 4 mg taken three or four times per day.
  • If results are insufficient or breathing impairment severe, dosage may be increased to 8 mg three or four times per day.
  • Do not exceed 32 mg in a single day (8 mg X 4 times).
  • Effects are more powerful if taken on an empty stomach.

If taking the maximum dosage---8 mg four times per day---using rescue inhalers is somewhat dangerous, especially if they also contain Salbutamol. At lower doses rescue inhaler use a few times per day will most likely not be harmful.

Salbutamol Oral Solution

The majority of patients buy Salbutamol oral solution for very young children or others who are reluctant or unable to use other forms of the medication. This formulation sees a lot of use in veterinary medicine as well.

Treatment is similar to tablets:

  • Start with 2 mg (1 teaspoon) or 4 mg (2 teaspoons) taken three or four times per day.
  • If results are insufficient or breathing impairment severe, dosage may be increased to 8 mg (4 teaspoons) three or four times per day.
  • Do not exceed 32 mg in a single day (8 mg X 4 times) in adults.
  • Do not exceed 12 mg in a single day (4 mg X 3 times) in patients under 6 years.

Again use of rescue inhalers should be done with extreme caution when taking the maximum dosage.
